Chaffee Grant, 57, son of U.S. Grant, Jr., who made his home in San Diego many years before his death in 1929, died in an Indio hospital Monday after a long illness, according to word received yesterday. Mr. Grant was a nantive of New York and came to San Diego with his parents 50 years ago. He attended San Diego schools and resided here until three years ago when he moved to Coachella. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Martin Smith, Jr. and a son, Jerome C. Grant, both of Salem Center, NY, Mrs. Edmond King, Seattle, and a brother U.S. Grant IV, Los Angeles.

Fannie Grant Purdy -- The Washington Post, Washington, D. C., 30 Dec 1924 GRANT'S DESCENDANT IS KILLED BY A FALL Mrs. F. G. Purdy, Granddaughter of General, Was Patient in San Francisco. Sa n Francisco, Dec 29. The body of Mrs. Fannie G. Purdy, 34, wealthy San Diego divorcee and grand daughter of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who leaped or fell to her death from the sixth story of the St. Francis hospital here yesterday will be sent to San Diego today. Mrs. Purdy was seen by her nurse to run down the corridor. The nurse followed, but was unable to halt her patient. She had been ill and despondent, and three days ago was removed to the hospital. Mrs. Purdy was married to Isaac Hart Purdy in Adrian, Michigan, in October, 1922. The couple lived for a time in Purdy, N.Y., where the father of the bridegroom Thomas Purdy, owned large estates. Acquaintances here said that the couple had been divorced for some time. One child, Hart Purdy. Jr., 11, is in San Diego. Maj. Ulysses S. Grant III of the Engineers corps, United States army, stationed here is said to be a brother of Mrs. Purdy.

Miriam was the granddaughter of the 18th President of the United States, General Ulysses Simpson Grant. Her first husband was Lt. Cmdr Ulysses Samuel Macy who died September 17, 1917. Her second husband was John C. "Jack" Rice
