Mrs. Alverta Storie Yates, 66, of 254 Oliver Hill Road, Banner Elk, widow of Mr. Arlen Yates, died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 6, at Cannon Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 1, 1930, in the Beech Mountain community of Avery County to the late Ivy and Floy Jones Storie. She and her late husband owned and operated Yates Grocery in the Matney community. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Louise Rupard and husband, Willie, of Banner Elk, Mrs. Beulah Trivette and husband, Allen, and Mrs. Janice Davis and husband, Edd, all of Elk Park, Mrs. Jewel Cook and husband, Bryant, and Ms. Carol Storie, all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Jack Storie of Elk Park and Chester Storie and wife, Joan, of Moore, S.C. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Iva Lee Davis and a brother, Mr. Charles Storie.
Service were Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel in Boone, officiated by the Rev. Millard Cook III and the Rev. Jimmy Storey. Graveside services and burial were conducted Sunday morning at Liberty-Matney Community Cemetery.
