    Notes
    • Dear Dad

It has been 4 Years since you have gone away. I know you were so tired of being here, and I know that you had a hard life. I miss you so much. I will never forget the day God took you. How you said that he had come to you the day before and told you that it was your time. How I held your hand and you cried. I wiped your tears away, and you wiped away mine. You asked me not to leave you alone, and I told you I'd stay and it was okay. Then, you closed your eyes.
And when mom got there, you would not wake up for the nurse. She kept saying "Robert", "Mr Shinn" but you were not hearing her. But when I yelled "dad" you opened your eyes and looked at me. Then you saw mom was there, and she got to say goodbye. I am so glad you heard me.
I miss your wise guidance, you knew so much about so many things. I miss playing cards with you. I miss being able to go to breakfast with you. I am so sorry we didn't go more often. I miss listening to you sing, and I know mom does too.
I remember when I was a little girl and you let me help you fix the roof. You made me feel so important that day. I created this site, because of you, and our family members gone before you. I thought you were a giant, I felt so small when holding your hand. You had the largest hands of any man I ever have known. I wish I could hold them just once more.
I admired your mind and your outgoing personality. Your creativeness is inherited by all of your children in one way or another. I am sure that all of your descendants will inherit the Shinn intelligence. Thank you for traveling. You gave us hardships that ended up being blessings, like learning the value of a dollar, and compassion. You can only have true knowledge of a situation if you have "been there". You did a lot of things wrong in your life and a lot more right. Thank you for loving our mother. Really loving her. Thank you for loving your country, and God. Thank you for all the love you spoke to your family in your last day. I hope you and your generation will never be forgotten.

    • Robert "Bob" was born in a mining shack in Cinco, WV. He lived there while small and remembered very little about his early life. He does indeed remember being poor and that there was soot everywhere. His father was a coal miner, and he had many relatives. When he was a toddler, his mother and father separated, and divorced soon thereafter. His father and he never remained close.
Robert was moved with his mother to Charleston. He said that he used to go to work with his mother and that she cleaned houses. His siblings were living with their father for a year or two. Unmarried, his mother could not care for herself and the older children. His mother then met his step-father Carl Stafford. Goldie had 4 boys and 1 girl and so did he. My father had a poor and hard life being one of the youngest of 10. They lived on greens, ham hocks, beans, cornbread, chicken, and other common country foods. He told me once that his stepfather beat him every day of his life.
During the depression, he was brought to Detroit, MI with the rest of the family. It was believed that there was more work and they could make a better life, which they did. From about 10 to 12 my father sold chipped ice that he pulled around in a wagon. He said they were still poor, but life was better.
As a teenager, his mother and carl had ended their relationship, all of the other kids were gone. Many a times my father said did he and his mother double date. He worked as a soda jerk and then a carpenter starting about the age of 13. He would give much of his money to his mother but he always had jeans and a white t-shirt (starched by my grandma), shined shoes, a fresh haircut, and a shave every day. The barbour shop, soda shop, and movie theater were his normal hangouts. Later the skating rink also.
As soon as pearl harbor was bombed, he and all of his brothers joined whatever military service they could get into. He ended up joining the merchant marines. He got kicked out for being underage, but later given an honorable discharge. He then joined the army. Shortly thereafter he met and married his 1st wife, Dorothy Craig. His missed his family and new wife, found the army difficult, and left. He was given a less than honorable discharge. His marriage to Dorothy ended quickly without any children. He wrote shackles and chains.
His 2nd wife was my mother, Jessie. He told me once that he loved her from the moment he saw her,and knew he'd love her all his life. They met when she was babysitting for his sister. He was 21, she 17. He charmed the socks off of Jessie, singing love songs to her. They married 3 months later. He wrote the song "From a Jack to a King" during the early part of their marriage. Jessie and Robert were married for 55 years.
During his younger years, he was a partying, motorcycle riding, jack of all trades con artist. Robert spent 3 terms in prison, one a felony, check fraud. During his prison time he became a non denominational minister. He founded NODD, a non denominational charity. Robert and Jessie had 7 kids, all born and raised in and around Detroit Michigan. They travelled a lot, family in tow, but mostly they lived and returned home to Michigan.
His hobbies were; playing pool, board games like scrabble and dominoes, gambling, casinos, crossword puzzles, singing, and playing guitar. He could play almost every card game created, and he was very hard to beat. He loved to eat and learned to cook what he liked well. He was well known in the family for his bean soup and cornbread, and biscuits and gravy never tasted better. He loved to travel, always on the go, even if it was just to go out to breakfast. He was a devoted Democrat, and loved Roosevelt. He loved to watch old westerns, movies, and the wheel of fortune. He was artistic, religious, stubborn, and set in his ways. He believed in the old sayings like "children should be seen and not heard".
If there's one thing to remember about Robert, it's that he loved my mother from the day he met her until the day he died.
