- From an interview with Nolan BEAVER:
He earned his nickname Fighting Bill BEAVER by never being one to back down from a fight and could dish out better than he could get. Here is one such incident, a story told Nolan by his father Luther who was Bill's nephew.
At one time there was bad blood between the BEAVERS an the WHITMORES. Bill was stopped outside a church on Sunday when three WHITMORE brothers confronted him. Bill told them that he really didn't want to fight outside a church on Sunday and wind up in jail, But he would meet them in the woods. When he met them, they wanted to start fighting immediately. Bill told them to hold up long enough for him to tie up his horse so it wouldn't be scared away by the fight. He said that since he was outnumbered, they would *whip* him and could take the horse. While tying up the horse, he pulled a hook-billed knife out of his pack and hid it somewhere on his person. Then all h*** broke loose. Three to one odds and Bill managed to lay out two of them before he found himself lying on the ground, looking up at one of the brothers who happened to be holding a huge chunk of rock that was aimed right at Bill's head. Bill managed to whip out his knife, come up and literally cut the bib fight off his overalls before laying out the third brother. They all lived, but probably thought twice before tangling with Fighting Bill BEAVER again.
- MINNIE BEAVERS
Minnie's name was given to me by one of her granddaughters. She was clerking at the Beaver store on the Blairsville Highway when I spoke with her. She also gave me Minnie's husband's name. Minnie was still living at the time and that would have been in the mid 1990s.
